Nothing means Something

My mom always like asking me to help her draw some things for her classroom, so when she asks it’s no problem, one of the bigger things she asked me to help her on was some “royal trains” for fiesta. When it came down to drawing them I decided to draw something simple like flowers for the girls train, and for the boys I did a sun with still some flowers ( I put the sun in there so it wouldn't seem so girly) on a blue train. My mom took them to her school and I didn't think anything of it at that time but a mother of a child asked my mom if I would like to make her a bigger image of the trains, for children’s room ideas, so I did

A few weeks, I posted these two pictures on Facebook, and later that day I kept on getting text messages and alert from Facebook, on these two pictures. Most of the messages I got were from people wanting some designs for tattoo ideas. Which I thought was pretty cool, have some that didn’t really mean anything to me become part of a person forever. Wow, I was shocked and amazed with the reaction I was getting.

Needless to say, I did start working on some tattoo designs and one of them did get put on the skin eventually. It was scary on my behalf, because I wanted to do a nice job since it was something that was permanent, but after a while its exciting, but I’m privileged to have done it for them.

The Art factor

Drawing didn’t really sink in for me, until I came here to college. I took an Art Appreciation class that opened my eyes to a different side that I haven’t seen yet. I thought that art was just things that were easy on the eyes. Some shocked me and some drew me closer to who I was.

Some of my favorite Artist are Margarita Cabrera, Sandy Skoglund and Takashi Murakami, all showcasing different kinds of art.

Margarita Cabrera and Sandy Skoglund were recently had pieces shown at the McNay Museum.

Margarita had her clay tractor model showed, Arbol de la Vida. It was the one of the most amazing pieces to experience. All the detail she had put into it, and that fact that it was all made of clay, amazing.

Skoglund had her Cocktail Party displayed at the McNay as well. This was my favorite at the time I went to see pieces at the McNay. It’s composed of Cheese Doodles, from the faces of the models and the celling to the floor. It was awesome to see this up close and personal.

Last but not least is Taskashi has worked with Louie Vuitton to create colorful purses with his illustrations and cartoon like artworks. He has also worked with Kanye West to create his album cover and illustrations to go with the album. He is my favorite by far. His colorful project are very bright and in your face.

In the beginning...

When I was in middle school, I had no interest in the arts at all, I was all about the sports and making sure I was doing my best in school, but when my sister (who was in high school and taking art classes), came home with projects and working on them at home, that's what started that small spark of interest in arts. I thought the she had it all, getting to get her hands dirty and being so focused and coming out with this amazing paintings, drawings, photographs, and ceramics. She had access to all the amazing colors, paints, pastels and charcoal. I had to admit, I was pretty jealous, because being younger and not careful, she didn’t allow me to touch her things.

Finally when I moved up to high school, I signed up for my first art class. My teacher, Bill Emley, taught me everything that I needed to know, shadows, shading, perspective, color, sculpting, and most importantly finding myself in the work I do. I always put myself down when drawing because I saw others doing so well that, I convinced myself that what I did was not enough. He taught us to be yourself and drawing the first thing that comes to our mind, and that where you start.

Drawing is very dear to me, drawing my fears, past, future, accomplishments, love, hate, and faith I have to it. It allows me to see where I have come from and where I need to be.
